15.1 out of 23.0 miles!

here we are at the start of day two! we got away from camp a little later than we had hoped (i think it took me longer than i thought it would to wrap up my feet) so we spent the morning towards the back of the pack.
the route the second day followed much the same route as when we walked in 2008, so we were happy to find another of the twin cities annual fixtures - jody's couch - in the same scenic location as last time.
here's laura completely cracked up and loosing it. you can decide for yourself if it's because i am that funny, or if she was just a little punchy from so many miles...
when we reached the day two lunch stop (at 11.4mi) my feet were crazy-hurting and i was having some major blister issues. i decided to head over to the medical tent and have a professional look at them.
here i am getting some of my blisters lanced and both my feet professionally wrapped up by a very kind and talented nurse.
please know how forced these big smiles are - i'm still getting my feet treated and laura was having major leg muscle cramping issues. so when the walk staff arrived and said they were closing lunch down in 5 minutes and we had to either be on the trail by then or on a bus that would take us back to camp or drop us off at pit stop 5, the decision was not that hard to make.
we chose to take the bus to pit stop 5. this cut about 8 miles out of the day's total but still gave us 3.7 miles to walk back to camp.
and miracle of miracles, guess what we found upon our arrival at pit stop five? the golden ticket of 3-day walkers snack food (and something i would never ever even consider eating in my normal life).... the beloved uncrustables.
after enjoying our processed crustless-sandwiches laura decided that her legs had stiffened up too much after all the sitting and that she would get on the bus to head back to camp in the hopes that by not over-extending herself she would be able to do the whole day on sunday. i though, didn't want my newly dressed feet to go to waste so i set off to do the last 3.7mi by myself.
it was a beautiful shady end to the day, walking along the gateway state trail. i'm glad that i decided to keep walking, but i can tell you that the last mile of the day felt like the longest mile in the history of miles. it was a very welcome site when i finally spied camp up ahead.
after a shower and dinner i was ready to relax a bit in our tent.
what?!? of course i brought knitting - dishcloths, what else? although i didn't knit too long, both laura and i were in bed sleeping before 8pm.
and thus ends day two.
yay for day two! it's so lovely that they do so many things along the way to make things a bit easier; the couch (pink of course!) and the nurses stations... but even with all of that you two are still superstars for walking all those miles! how lovely that you got to do a few stitches of knitting at the end. i love how the tent makes everything look purple. fun shot!

Ouch! The blisters sounded painful! Glad you were able to keep going!

ah...the sag wagon! I became quite familiar with it during my 800 mile bike trip a few years ago :)
Love your commentary on the uncrustables. Seriously wishing I came up with that lazy idea!

I think I've seen that first picture somewhere...oh yeah, it made my day to see a smiling Melissa face show up in my mailbox last week!! It means even more to know the smile was still there despite what I know was severe pain with blistered feet. So impressed that you pushed through the pain and finished those last few miles. Spirit.
